(1) The main purpose of designing the hydraulic cylinder is to understand and master the use and working requirements of the hydraulic cylinder on the machine and meet the action requirements and use of the mechanism. For example, the hydraulic cylinder used for hydraulic dump truck is used to lift the dump into an inclined state, so that the loaded materials can be unloaded automatically, and its return can be completed under the gravity of the dump. In this case, the hydraulic cylinder can be designed as a single (piston) rod single acting hydraulic cylinder or a plunger cylinder. Another example is the hydraulic cylinder of the truck crane. In order to adapt to the conversion of different lifting heights and workplaces, the hydraulic cylinder for the boom must be a telescopic multi-stage hydraulic cylinder. The specific structure can be a single acting plunger type multi-stage hydraulic cylinder, a piston type multi-stage hydraulic cylinder, or a final piston type multi-stage hydraulic cylinder, depending on the specific situation.

(2) Understand the working environment conditions of the hydraulic cylinder. The structure and design parameters of the hydraulic cylinder are different due to different working environment conditions. For example, the vertical (support) cylinder on the hydraulic support used in the coal mining face has poor working conditions, large dust, and large change of support (working) pressure (large load change). The vertical (support) cylinder is required to be safe and reliable, and no leakage is allowed. In view of this working condition, dust prevention measures shall be taken into consideration when designing. The strength and stability of cylinder block and plunger shall be reliable, the safety factor shall be larger, and the sealing performance shall be better. Like the hydraulic cylinder used for precision external (internal) grinder, the working environment is relatively clean, the load is stable and small, and the structure and design parameters should adapt to its working conditions.        

(3) Understand the external load, mainly referring to the external load's mass, geometric shape, space volume, motion track, friction resistance and connection form of connection parts. For example, for hydraulic dump trucks, the external load of the hydraulic cylinder is the dump bucket (carriage) and the loaded goods. When the dump bucket rises and tilts, the axis of the hydraulic cylinder will swing, which requires that the head of the piston rod and the dump bucket be connected by ear ring or pin shaft, and the installation form of the hydraulic cylinder base and the body should also be ear ring or ear shaft.
